Following oral arguments in Watson v. Republican National Committee (RNC) Monday, the fate of mail-in ballot grace periods remains unclear as the U.S.Supreme Court justices split on the case’s central question: When is a vote actually made — when a voter casts a ballot or when election officials receive it?
The question boils down to: When does someone vote? Is it when the ballot is submitted — whether placed in a drop box or a mailbox — or is it when it’s received by election officials?
The Senate adjourned instead of recessing. That distinction may sound arcane, but it’s the latest signal that MAGA’s hopes for a “talking filibuster” to eventually force the measure through are doomed. And even the measure’s Senate champion appears to be resigned to that outcome.
