Texas Senate Redistricting Challenge
Brooks v. Abbott
Lawsuit filed on behalf of a group of Texas voters and state Sen. Beverly Powell (D) against Texas’ new state Senate map drawn with 2020 census data. Specifically, the complaint focuses on Tarrant County and the 10th state Senate District, home to Powell, and alleges that intentional racial discrimination and the predominant yet unjustified use of race during the map-drawing process has resulted in the dilution of minority voting strength in Tarrant County. The suit argues the map violates the 14th and 15th Amendments and Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act and asks the court to block the current Senate map and order the redrawing of 10th state Senate District to protect minority voting power. The case was consolidated with six others challenging Texas’ redistricting results; the lead case where future filings can be found is League of United Latin American Citizens v. Abbott.
