Wisconsin Congressional Redistricting Challenge

Bothfeld v. Wisconsin Elections Commission

A pro-voting lawsuit challenging Wisconsin’s congressional map as a partisan gerrymander.

Background

Wisconsin voters are challenging the state’s congressional map as a partisan gerrymander. After Gov. Evers (D) vetoed a gerrymandered congressional map in 2021, the conservative majority on the state supreme court adopted a map that made the “least change” to the 2011 gerrymander that blatantly favored Republicans. Voters argue that the map packs Democrats into two congressional districts and cracks other Democratic communities into Republican districts. Voters claim that the current congressional map violates the state constitution. They ask the state’s highest court to take the case and order a new map for the 2026 congressional elections.

Why It Matters

Republicans have enjoyed a significant advantage in the state’s congressional delegation for over a decade, despite a near-even partisan split statewide.
