An anti-voting lawsuit seeking access to voter list maintenance records from two Hawaii counties.
Background
The Public Interest Legal Foundation (PILF) sued the county clerks of Maui and Kauaʻi, alleging that the counties violated the National Voter Registration Act (NVRA) by failing to maintain and disclose records related to their voter list maintenance activities. In February, PILF requested records concerning the counties’ voter list maintenance procedures and alleges that the counties failed to adequately produce the requested records. PILF argues that Maui and Kauaʻi violated the NVRA by failing to retain the records for at least two years and by refusing to make them available for public inspection. PILF is asking the court to order the counties to produce the requested records and to require them to maintain such records for at least two years.
Why It Matters
This lawsuit is the latest in a series of PILF cases seeking to pressure states and local governments to more aggressively purge voters from registration rolls under the NVRA.
