Texas Travis County Voter Registration Intimidation Challenge
Brown v. Paxton
Lawsuit filed by Travis County’s tax assessor and county commissioners against Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton (R) and Texas Secretary of State Jane Nelson (R) challenging the state’s campaign that seeks to prevent county officials from facilitating voter registration and participation. The plaintiffs claim that the attorney general has used threats and public statements to intimidate local government officials across the state into ceasing voter registration efforts. The plaintiffs allege that this campaign includes a recent lawsuit filed by the attorney general on behalf of Texas against Travis County officials for mailing voter registration applications to eligible individuals who have not registered to vote yet. They argue the attorney general’s voter suppression campaign violates National Voter Registration Act (NVRA), and ask the court to prohibit the state from interfering with the county’s voter registration activities.Â
STATUS: The plaintiffs filed their complaint on Sept. 17, 2024. The state defendants have not responded yet.
