Texas Bexar County Voter Registration Mailing Challenge

Texas v. Callanen

Lawsuit filed by the state of Texas, through Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton (R), against Bexar County commissioners and local officials challenging the county’s plan to send voter registration applications to over 200,000 unregistered voters. Texas argues that the county does not have the legal authority to use government funds to hire a vendor to mail unsolicited voter registration forms. They ask the court to block the county’s plan from moving forward.

STATUS: On Sept. 16, the court denied Paxton’s motion for a temporary injunction, concluding the request was moot since the county already sent out the voter registration forms. Paxton subsequently appealed the ruling.

On Sept. 17, the defendants filed a notice of removal to federal court, which Paxton opposed. Litigation is ongoing.
