State of North Carolina

North Carolina Legislative Partisan Gerrymandering

Common Cause v. Lewis

Lawsuit filed on behalf of Common Cause, the North Carolina Democratic Party and individual voters challenging the state’s 2017 legislative maps based on allegations that they were drawn with partisan intent to create a Republican-controlled Legislature. The court agreed with the plaintiffs that the 2017 maps were intentionally drawn to favor Republicans in violation of the state constitution and prohibited the use of the maps for future elections. The court directed the Legislature to draw new maps for the blocked districts.
