Case Manager

Democracy Docket is seeking a Case Manager to lead our case team! Tracking over 550 voting and election cases, Democracy Docket is the only media outlet dedicated to exposing what’s happening in courtrooms around the country, to an everyday audience. The Case Manager is responsible for leading this effort– in supervising the case team, coordinating coverage of litigation across the larger Democracy Docket team, and driving the overall strategy of our litigation related content and offerings. The Case Manager position is a full-time position based in Washington, D.C with partial remote work. The salary range is $80k-$115k. Responsibilities

  • Oversee all upcoming and ongoing voting rights litigation that Democracy Docket is tracking 
  • Supervise two case coordinators and direct the team in tracking litigation in real time, maintaining case documents and developing related content
  • Responsible for keeping Democracy Docket staff updated and coordinated on case developments and news (i.e., new lawsuits, major developments in a case, decisions, etc.) 
  • Read and analyze court documents (complaints, briefings, decisions, etc.) and distill key information into understandable terms for both our team and wider audience, as needed
  • Work closely with the Content Manager to provide direction and input on Democracy Docket’s content as it relates to litigation related topics
  • Write long-form content on legal topics as needed
  • Work closely with the social media team regarding strategy and coordination for upcoming and ongoing voting rights litigation
  • Oversee pre-publication content review of litigation-focused copy to ensure accuracy as needed
  • Lead development of reports detailing litigation trends and takeaways based on data derived from our case database; work closely across teams to coordinate required work product
  • Compile case data and litigation related information for internal and external distribution
  • Stay up to date on the voting rights landscape and relevant news

Skills

  • Understanding of the U.S. court system and litigation
  • A demonstrated passion for voting rights, progressive politics and litigation
  • Experience with legal databases and platforms (Pacer) is a plus
  • Strong research, writing and editing skills; familiarity with AP style is a plus
  • Ability to translate complex topics into digestible and clear messaging for the public
  • Strong leadership skills; fosters collaboration and communicates effectively with colleagues 
  • Experience supervising direct report(s). Ability to manage and motivate team members on a daily basis
  • Ability to prioritize, multitask and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment; must work well under pressure
  • Excellent presentation and written and oral communication skills
  • Strong analytical skills; quantitative and data skills are a plus
  • Excel and/or Google Sheets experience is a plus

Education and Experience 

  • 2-4 years experience in voting rights, progressive politics or the legal field
  • Bachelor’s Degree required
  • Juris Doctor preferred but not required
  • This position is based in Washington, D.C
