News Editor
As the News Editor, you will play a critical role in ensuring that the organization produces high-quality, accurate and compelling content that informs and engages its audience during a crucial election cycle. You will be responsible for overseeing the development and production of breaking news articles, long-form analysis articles and our free newsletters. You will lead a team of writers to provide in-depth reporting, insightful analysis and up-to-date information on significant developments impacting voting rights, democracy and elections in the courts.

Responsibilities:
- Supervise a team of reporters in writing compelling and accurate breaking news articles, long-form analysis pieces, explainers and more.
- Work closely with reporters to ensure proper sourcing, framing and story development.
- Manage breaking news coverage by identifying newsworthy article ideas, exercising editorial judgment and quickly responding and assigning coverage.
- Edit all news, analysis and newsletter content for copy, accuracy and style.
- Set and maintain the news content calendar and reporters’ deadlines to ensure articles are published in a timely manner.
- Ensure the topic, tone and mix of stories are in line with Democracy Docket’s editorial focus.
- Work in close partnership with other editors/managers in brainstorming content.
- Use website, social media and email analytics to inform editorial strategy.
- Ensure adherence to journalistic standards and accuracy in reporting.
Skills and Qualifications:
- 5+ years working in a newsroom with at least 2 years of full-time experience managing journalists and editing their work.
- Excellent writing and editing skills, with the ability to craft compelling narratives and analyze complex issues for a broad audience.
- A knack for writing accurate, strong and engaging headlines.
- Strong adherence to AP style.
- Familiarity with/basic understanding of the legal system, especially law relating to elections, voting and democracy.
- The ability to quickly pick up new topics and work in a fast-paced newsroom during a presidential election year.
- Passionate about mission-driven journalism.
The annual salary range for this position is $85,000-$115,000.
