Staff Writer

Democracy Docket is seeking a Staff Writer with strong writing skills and a passion for voting rights and democracy to join our Writing Team. Given the ever-changing news landscape, the Staff Writer position requires an eagerness to learn quickly and adapt to a fast-paced environment. Along with writing long-form analysis pieces, breaking news articles, daily and weekly newsletters and more, a Staff Writer at Democracy Docket is expected to stay up to date with the latest voting rights news, recognize emerging issues and provide astute insight and analysis into these trends. 

The Staff Writer position is full-time and based in Washington, D.C., on a hybrid in-office schedule. The annual salary range for this position is $58,000-$72,000. Responsibilities

  • Write articles on a daily basis including breaking news and long-form articles focused on voting rights and elections in the courts. 
  • Contribute to our daily and weekly newsletters. This includes: drafting copy, copy editing, as well as placing and sending through Mailchimp.
  • Collaborate with the Case Team in drafting articles on litigation they are tracking. 
  • Copy edit long-form articles, news articles and newsletters according to AP Style.
  • Closely follow voting rights and redistricting litigation and pitch story ideas in addition to working on stories assigned by the Content Manager.
  • Perform other related duties and projects. 

Required Skills

  • Excellent research and writing skills, experience and enthusiasm for mission-driven journalism.  
  • Solid understanding of voting rights, elections, and redistricting in the courts.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and multitask.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Naturally inquisitive and passionate about voting rights and democracy in the courts. 
  • An understanding of AP style is preferred. 
  • Experience with WordPress and/or MailChimp a plus.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree required
  • 1-4 years of experience in journalism or other writing-focused roles.
