Colorado Overseas Voters Challenge
RNC v. Griswold
An anti-voting lawsuit from Republicans seeking to disenfranchise overseas U.S. citizens who are eligible to vote in Colorado elections.
Background
The Republican National Committee (RNC) and Republican congressional candidate Jeff Crank filed a lawsuit against Secretary of State Jena Griswold (D), challenging state law and secretary of state guidance that allows certain U.S. citizens who have never lived in Colorado to register and vote in the state if their parent, guardian, or spouse resided in the state before leaving the country. The plaintiffs argue that the law violates the Colorado Constitution’s residency requirement for voting, which states that only U.S. citizens who have “resided in this state” and meet other qualifications may vote. They are asking the court to block the law and guidance, remove affected voters from the rolls and prevent them from receiving or casting ballots.
Why It Matters
This action is part of Republicans’ nationwide legal strategy to perpetuate claims of ineligible voters casting ballots in American elections. The RNC also filed similar lawsuits against Nebraska, Virginia, Arizona, North Carolina and Michigan.
