U.S. House Passes Protecting Our Democracy Act

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Protecting Our Democracy Act, H.R. 5314, a bill that tackles government ethics and accountability issues. Sponsored by Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), the bill passed 220-208, with all Democrats in favor.

“The comprehensive proposals — many of which have been supported by both Democrats and Republicans in the past — will restore the government’s system of checks and balances, strengthen accountability and transparency and protect America’s elections from foreign interference,” wrote the bill sponsors in a press release. In an op-ed, Schiff called the Protecting Our Democracy Act the “third pillar of our Congress’ democracy agenda.” H.R. 5314 now awaits action in the Senate, where the other “pillars” — the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act and the Freedom to Vote Act — have been blocked by Republican filibusters.
