Census Bureau Releases Reapportionment Data
WASHINGTON, D.C. — The U.S. Census Bureau published its 2020 census survey data on Monday, including new population totals for each state and the reapportionment of seats in the U.S. House of Representatives. During a live-streamed press conference with Census officials and Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo, the Bureau released two key documents that will determine the new apportionment of House seats that will be up in next year’s elections: a state-by-state population count and the total number of congressional seats that each state will receive, adjusted based on changes in population over the last decade.
The 2020 census results were delayed due to collection disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as Republican sabotage of the Bureau’s efforts to count every person. This delay means that the redistricting efforts in each state will have adjusted timelines, with many states starting to redraw their lines immediately in order to enact new maps before the 2022 elections.
