When does my state mail ballots to voters? 

With just 52 days until Election Day, some states have already begun to send out mail ballots, but a pending ruling from the U.S. Supreme Court on President Donald Trump’s attempt to restrict mail voting could put those and other mail ballots at risk. 

As part of Trump’s order, the U.S. Postal Service is supposed to launch an online portal to help enforce new mail voting restrictions. As of Sept. 12, that’s still not up and running. And if states mail their ballots before the portal launches, states won’t be able to comply with the order, meaning millions of ballots could be rejected before they even reach voters — that is if the Supreme Court upholds Trump’s anti-mail voting order.

The consequences of the Court’s ruling are enormous. One-third of the electorate, or 47 million people, cast their ballots by mail in 2024.
