Chris Taylor, a Dane County state appeals judge, has secured a seat on the Wisconsin Supreme Court in a major win for Democrats heading into the midterms.

Taylor, a former circuit court judge and Democratic state assemblymember, beat out conservative Maria Lazar, running a campaign that focused on voting rights.

The battleground state’s highest court will now have a 5-2 liberal supermajority. This could signal a new future for voting rights, as the state supreme court hears lawsuits about congressional and state legislative redistricting.

Last year, the court declined to hear a pro-voting lawsuit challenging Wisconsin’s congressional map. But voters continue to fight for a court order to redraw decades of partisan gerrymandering in the state.

“Wisconsinites showed up in droves to elect Chris Taylor because they know every election is an emergency,” Devin Remiker, chair of the Wisconsin Democratic Party, said in a press release Tuesday.
