Texas SAVE System Voter Purge Challenge

League of United Latin American Citizens v. Nelson

A pro-voting lawsuit challenging Texas’ voter purge program based on unreliable data from the SAVE system.

The League of United Latin American Citizens and several other civil rights organizations filed a lawsuit against Texas, challenging a voter purge initiative tied to the state’s agreement with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). Under that agreement, Texas relied on data from the Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements (SAVE) system to identify noncitizens on the voter rolls ahead of the midterm elections. The plaintiffs argue that the program violates the National Voter Registration Act by failing to meet its public disclosure requirements and by employing a voter list maintenance process that is neither uniform nor nondiscriminatory. They are asking the court to halt the purge program and to reinstate any voters who were improperly removed.

According to the plaintiffs, the SAVE database is not designed for voter eligibility determinations and contains outdated information. Texas often relies completely on SAVE data without verifying citizenship through their own state databases, creating a significant risk that naturalized U.S. citizens will be wrongly flagged and removed from the rolls.
