Hawaii Voter Roll Records Challenge

Republican National Committee v. State of Hawaii, Office of Elections

An anti-voting lawsuit seeking access to state voter roll and list maintenance records.

Background

The Republican National Committee (RNC) is suing the Hawaii Office of Elections and Chief Election Officer Scott Nago for allegedly violating the state’s Uniform Information Practices Act (UIPA) by refusing to release records related to voter list maintenance under the National Voter Registration Act (NVRA).

In March, the RNC requested sixteen categories of records about how Hawaii maintains accurate voter rolls, including removals due to death, relocation, criminal conviction and non-citizenship. The Office declined to confirm whether it held responsive records and directed the RNC to contact county clerks instead. The RNC claims this violates UIPA’s requirements for timely access and disclosure.

Why It Matters

This lawsuit is part of a broader RNC effort to obtain detailed voter registration data from states nationwide. While framed as promoting transparency, such efforts have been used to justify aggressive voter roll purges and to cast doubt on election integrity, potentially undermining voter confidence and access.
