Colorado Voting Systems Challenge
Libertarian Party of Colorado v. Griswold
Lawsuit filed by the Libertarian Party of Colorado against Colorado Secretary of State Jena Griswold and Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Beall challenging the state’s use of voting systems for the 2024 election. According to the complaint, voting system passwords for multiple counties were listed on a publicly accessible spreadsheet on the Colorado secretary of state’s website until Oct. 24, 2024. Following the discovery and removal of the spreadsheet, Beall issued an emergency election rule allowing Griswold to change the passwords. The plaintiff argued Beall did not have the authority to issue the rule and updating the passwords invalidated the certification of the voting systems. The plaintiff asked the court to void Beall’s rule, decommission any voting system associated with the published passwords and order ballots to be hand counted in affected counties.
The plaintiff filed its complaint on Nov. 1, 2024.
RESULT: On Nov. 5, 2024, a Denver judge rejected the plaintiff’s claims, ruling that voting systems had not been compromised and could be used in the 2024 election.
