Alaska Voter Roll Maintenance Records Challenge

Public Interest Legal Foundation v. Meyer

Lawsuit filed by a conservative legal group, the Public Interest Legal Foundation (PILF), against Alaska Lt. Gov. Kevin Meyer (R) (who oversees elections in Alaska) arguing that Alaska must release documents related to the maintenance of the state’s voter lists. In its complaint, PILF claims that, under the Public Disclosure Provision of the National Voter Registration Act (NVRA), the defendant is obligated to produce voter rolls for inspection by PILF “to ensure that election officials are fulfilling their list maintenance duties.” The plaintiff argues that the Alaska Board of Elections’ failure to produce data “concerning registered voters identified as deceased or potentially deceased” violates the NVRA. The plaintiff asks the court to order Meyer to produce voter registration data and voter list maintenance records, which include information that discloses voters’ “identification numbers, county or locality, full names, addresses, and dates of birth.” On Sept. 20, 2023, the parties entered a settlement, thereby ending litigation.
