Trump Legal Team Files Response to Article of Impeachment

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Former President Donald Trump’s legal team filed its response to the article of impeachment today. As expected, the brief repeatedly argued that the impeachment provision does not apply to Trump now that he is out of office.

The brief also outright denied that Trump engaged in an insurrection and even doubled down on his accusations of fraud in the November election, writing that his comments on Jan. 6 “expressed his opinion that the election results were suspect…To the extent Averment 5 alleges his opinion is factually in error, the 45th President denies this allegation.”

Despite fanning the flames of election conspiracy theories, the brief still attempted to argue that Trump never “threatened the integrity of the democratic system, interfered with the peaceful transition of power, and imperiled a coequal branch Government.”

The impeachment trial is set to start on Feb. 9. You can find the House impeachment managers’ brief from earlier today here.
