‘A big loss for Republicans’: Trump, MAGA attack conservative Supreme Court over mail voting ruling

President Donald Trump lashed out Tuesday morning after the U.S. Supreme Court blocked the administration’s mail voting restrictions for November’s midterm elections.

The target of his ire? His own nominees to the Court, who he claims have become a “shell of their original selves.”

“Republicans just got another bad decision from the United States Supreme Court, one that the Court System took forever to give, and then blamed it, in part, on no time left to implement a solution to our totally CORRUPT and out of control Mail-In voting ‘disaster,’ which is a laughing stock all over the World, and where we are the only country that has to endure such a Nation Destroying SCAM,” Trump wrote Tuesday morning in a Truth Social rant. 

“It is a big loss for Republicans, and America itself, and makes cheating by the Radical Left ‘Dumocrats,’ on Mail-In Ballots, a much easier thing to do – And now they have an open field to do so!” the president added. 

In a ruling Monday evening, the justices declined to lift a lower court order that barred the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) from implementing a mail voting rule stemming from an anti-voting executive order Trump signed in March. The new rule would require states to submit lists of voters who intend to vote by mail and design new ballot envelopes with trackable barcodes. If states didn’t comply, USPS said it would not deliver ballots to their voters.

In an unsigned order, the Court said that the Trump administration was “unlikely to succeed on the merits of its challenge to the District Court’s preliminary injunction.”

Justices Samuel Alito and Clarence Thomas — the Court’s most hardcore conservatives — dissented. In a short concurring opinion, Justice Brett Kavanaugh said that it was too close to the election to implement the rule before voting begins, but also left the door open to implement Trump’s mail voting restriction for future elections.

Still, Trump was not happy with Kavanaugh or Amy Coney Barrett and Neil Gorsuch, the two other conservative justices he appointed to the nation’s highest court. 

“This Supreme Court is bullied and cajoled by the Radical Left into making decisions that have set America back at least a hundred years,” Trump said. “These are not the people I interviewed to serve on the United States Supreme Court, they are merely a shell of their original selves, a Court that is costing the United States Trillions of Dollars with shockingly bad rulings that are of such magnitude that it won’t be easily possible for our Country to recover or heal.”

Other prominent figures from the MAGA movement also took aim at the Court.

“Furthering naked judicial interference in the 2026 elections, the Supreme Court has thwarted President Trump’s modest efforts to ensure that the mails [sic] aren’t used for voter fraud,” Tom Fitton, president of the far-right legal group Judicial Watch, wrote on social media. “The courts, at the behest of the Left, have delayed simple Postal Service rule changes for months and now the Supreme Court, which aided and abetted these delay [sic], seems to pretend is ‘too late’ to protect our elections two months from now.”

Seth Keshel, a popular anti-voting activist, said on social media that the conservative justices on the Court were “compromised” because they had ruled against some of Trump’s most extreme attempts to thwart democracy.

“If the Supreme Court truly cared about the future of America, they’d have used the opportunities presented to them this year to annihilate mail-in voting, which almost all functioning nations ban, and terminate birthright citizenship,” Keshel wrote. “I mean, I’m glad we get the occasional pat on the back ruling allowing government employees to play their choice of music or have a casual dress day on Fridays, but maybe one day we can win an existential case with this “6 to 3” majority hobbled by several compromised judges.”

Mike Engleman, a popular right-wing social media influencer, said the conservative justices are “traitors” to the country. 

“People need to stop saying we have a conservative 6-3 Supreme Court! It’s NOT conservative by any means!” Engleman posted. “It voted to implement Obamacare, birthright citizenship, and against any form of election security/integrity, outside of Thomas and Alito! By allowing Mail-In Ballots with no limits, counting ballots for days and weeks after election day, it’s aiding and abetting to allow destruction of America. They are traitors to America.”

Engleman also said Trump should declare a national emergency to take over voting for the midterm elections. 

Over the past year, multiple right-wing figures with ties to the president have called for such an emergency declaration.

After Monday’s Supreme Court ruling, some of them renewed that call.

“We have [sic] COMMANDING conservative 6-3 advantage in Supreme Court. Yet they vote for Obamacare… for birthright citizenship… & against any form of election security/integrity,” far-right commentator Wayne Allyn Root wrote. “They allow mail-in ballots with no limits & counting ballots days past election… I hope & pray President Trump now understands there is no other choice- he needs to declare [sic] National Security Emergency. I have branded it ‘NEED Act.’”

Last month, while interviewing the president for his show on the right-wing Real America’s Voice network, Root tried to convince the president that he could — and should — declare an elections emergency.

“Let me just say stranger things have happened,” Trump said in response. “I’ll leave it at that.”
