Trump Administration Taxpayer Funded Political Ads Challenge (DPW)
The Democratic Party of Wisconsin v. Trump
A pro-voting lawsuit challenging the Trump Administration’s use of taxpayer dollars to fund ads promoting President Trump and Republican candidates.
Background
The Democratic Party of Wisconsin (DPW) and Yee Leng Xiong, the Democratic candidate for Wisconsin state treasurer, filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration for using taxpayer dollars to fund advertisements promoting Trump and Republican candidates ahead of the midterm elections. The plaintiffs allege that the administration diverted $20 million in funds Congress appropriated for border security and Department of Homeland Security commemorations, including memorials honoring employees who died in the line of duty, to pay for the ads. They allege that this misuse of funds is unconstitutional and violates federal law. The plaintiffs ask the court to block the Trump administration from continuing to use the appropriated funds to produce and air the political advertisements.
Why It Matters
This is the latest effort of the Trump administration to influence the midterm elections. While Trump himself is not on the ballot this year, the tax-payer funded ad campaign is part of an effort to bolster Republicans as they struggle to keep control of Congress.
