Michigan Ingham County Election Inspectors Challenge

Ingham County Republican Party v. Election Commission of the City of Lansing

An anti-voting lawsuit challenging Ingham County, Michigan’s appointment of poll workers.

Background

The Ingham County Republican Party, the Michigan Republican Party, and the Republican National Committee sued Lansing, Mich’s Election Commission, alleging that it violated state law by not appointing enough Republican poll workers, which are called “election inspectors” in Michigan. The plaintiffs ask the court to order Lansing’s Election Commission to adopt new procedures to ensure the appointment of more Republican election inspectors.

Why It Matters

Poll workers play a vital role in elections. Election administrators often struggle to find enough people to serve as poll workers, and finding equal numbers of poll workers from each party is often difficult in areas where voters of one party outnumber the other. Rigorous training and appointment standards are important for hiring poll workers, especially in places like Michigan where election deniers have attempted to infiltrate the role in the past. This lawsuit follows the same playbook as an earlier plan by GOP operatives to target the Detroit elections clerk.
