Texas Redistricting Challenge (Texas NAACP)

Texas State Conference of the NAACP v. Abbott

Lawsuit filed on behalf of the Texas State Conference of the NAACP challenging Texas’ new legislative and congressional maps passed following the release of 2020 census data. The complaint argues that the Texas House, Texas Senate and U.S. Congress maps violate the 14th and 15th Amendments and Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act because the Texas Legislature impermissibly used race as the prominent factor in redrawing districts, leading to the dilution of voting strength for Texans of color. The lawsuit asks the court to block the use of the current maps and order the creation of new maps that allow voters of color to elect their candidates of choice. The case was consolidated with six others challenging Texas’ redistricting results; the lead case where future filings can be found is League of United Latin American Citizens v. Abbott.
