New Jersey Polling Place Accessibility Challenge
Hector and Alonso for Assembly v. Hudson County Board of Elections
A pro-voting lawsuit seeking additional polling locations in Hudson County’s growing waterfront communities.
Background
Hector and Alonso for Assembly filed a lawsuit against the Hudson County Board of Elections after the Board denied their request to establish more polling places in the communities of Guttenberg, North Bergen, Weehawken and West New York. The plaintiffs argue that the current polling locations are inaccessible to approximately 8,000 residents. The lawsuit claims this disparity violates constitutional rights and the principle of “one person, one vote.” The plaintiff seeks a court order to mandate at least three new polling places and one early voting site before the 2025 primary.
Why it Matters
Hudson County’s population has grown significantly in these communities, but the amount of polling places has not kept up, potentially disenfranchising thousands of New Jersey residents. There are also broader concerns about equal access to the ballot box and the use of ‘administrative deadlines’ to justify voter suppression.
