Minnesota Hennepin County Election Judge Appointment Challenge
Minnesota Voters Alliance v. Gelms
Petition filed by the Minnesota Voters Alliance, Republican Party of Minnesota and three Republican election judges against three Hennepin County election officials challenging the county’s absentee ballot board staffing. In Minnesota, absentee ballot boards are comprised of a set of election judges or administrators who process returned absentee ballots. The plaintiffs allege that Hennepin County failed to appoint any election judges from the state Republican party’s list of candidates to the board, which they claim violates Minnesota election law. They ask the Minnesota Supreme Court to order Hennepin County to reapportion the absentee ballot board to ensure an equal balance between Republican and Democratic affiliated election judges in compliance with state law.
RESULT: On Oct. 29, 2024, the Minnesota Supreme Court partially granted the Republican plaintiffs’ petition. Hennepin County must appoint election judges from the Republican party’s list of candidates by Nov. 1, 2024.
