Michigan Redistricting Commission Challenge
Detroit News, Inc. v. Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission
Lawsuit filed on behalf of multiple Michigan-based news organizations against Michigan’s Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission. The complaint alleges that the Commission violated multiple state constitutional provisions regarding transparency in the redistricting process. Specifically, the plaintiffs argue that the commissioners did not hold an Oct. 27 meeting in public as required by the Michigan Constitution and that they withheld crucial documents that were central to these private meetings, despite multiple requests from news organizations. After holding an oral argument, the Supreme Court of Michigan ruled that the Commission must release the Oct. 27 meeting recording and seven memoranda related to the redistricting process.
