Maryland Voter Roll Maintenance Challenge
RNC v. Demarinis
An anti-voting lawsuit brought by Republicans challenging Marylandâs voter list maintenance practices.
Background
The Republican National Committee (RNC) and the Maryland Republican Party filed a lawsuit against Maryland election officials under the National Voter Registration Act (NVRA), alleging that the state has failed to properly maintain accurate voter rolls. The plaintiffs argue that Marylandâs voter registration lists are significantly inflatedâincluding two counties reporting more registered voters than eligible voting-age citizens, and several others with high registration ratesâand that election officials are not making the âreasonable effortsâ required by federal law to remove deceased, duplicate, relocated, or otherwise ineligible voters. They are seeking a court order requiring the state to implement adequate list-maintenance procedures and remove ineligible voters from the rolls.
Why It Matters
This is part of a broader, rapidly intensifying national effort by Republicans to clear the path for aggressive voter roll purges.
