Indiana Student ID Ban Challenge
Count US IN v. Morales
A pro-voting lawsuit challenging Indiana’s ban on the use of a student ID for voting.
Background
Two advocacy groups and a student voter are challenging Indiana’s new law — Senate Bill 10 — banning the use of student ID for voting. The plaintiffs argue that the state is engaging in a “surgical attack” on student voters as state election law does not prohibit the use of any other form of photo ID. They claim the law violates the First, 14th and 26th amendments and ask the court to block enforcement of the student ID ban.
Why It Matters
Since 2005, thousands of young voters have used a student ID for voting in Indiana. Monroe County’s election supervisor estimated that two-thirds of the 50,000 students at Indiana University Bloomington used a student ID to vote in the 2024 general election.
