Arizona Maricopa County Voting System Security Challenge
Maricopa County Republican Committee v. Maricopa County
Lawsuit filed by the Maricopa County Republican Committee (MCRC) and Republican candidate for the Arizona House of Representatives, Blaine Griffin, against Maricopa County, the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors and its members challenging the security of the county’s passwords to access to its electronic voting systems. The plaintiffs allege that the county has violated state law by allowing certain vendor-supplied passwords to be used in its election systems. MCRC claims that the use of these passwords are a threat to the security of the upcoming 2024 election. The plaintiffs ask the court to block voters from using machines without protected passwords. Alternatively, they ask that the county be ordered to produce records from the voting machines used in the 2024 election within 24 hours of polls closing on Nov. 5.
A hearing was held on Friday, Nov. 1.
RESULT: On Nov. 4, 2024, the court denied the Republican plaintiffs’ request. Marciopa County may continue to use vendor-supplied passwords for its voting machines.
