Trump demands an end to the filibuster to pass the SAVE America Act

President Donald Trump posted a rambling paragraph to his social media platform Monday, demanding that U.S. Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) get rid of the filibuster for a “full and deep throated SAVE AMERICA ACT.”

As the legislative recess approaches, Trump has said Thune should not let senators leave until they pass his anti-voting bill that includes suppressive measures like those recently blocked by a federal appeals court.

Today, Trump again desperately called for an end to the filibuster, which ensures legislation does not pass unless it has a 60-vote majority in the Senate. The SAVE America Act does not.

Thune has repeatedly referenced this fact and expressed frustration at the president’s administration for trying to force a passage when the math does not add up.

“It’s around 50 here,” Thune told reporters July 23. “And, so, instead of pointing the finger at Republicans, they might think about going after the people who are stopping it on the floor, which is the Democrats.”

One of Trump’s staunchest allies on the legislation, Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah), also said this weekend he wants the Senate to stay in session “as long as it takes” to get the bill passed. Sen. Rick Scott (R-Fla.) posted in support of Lee and the push to pass the bill through an elongated legislative session.

The Senate recess is planned to start Aug. 6.

In his post, Trump also disparaged Democrats and claimed they would get rid of the filibuster as soon as they had a majority in the Senate. He said without a filibuster, Republicans could pass whatever they wanted. 

“Remember, stupidity always brings LOSING & DEATH,” Trump wrote at the end.

Trump’s Monday morning outburst comes on the heels of a weekend marathon of Truth Social posts. He made 43 posts — many AI-generated — depicting everything from attacks on reporters to deepfake images of the war in Iran and suggestions of a 2028 presidential run, which would be unconstitutional.
