North Carolina Four Pillars Intervention (RNC)

Lawsuit brought by the Trump campaign, Republican National Party Committees and two Republican congressmen challenging a consent decree entered in state court with the North Carolina State Board of Elections that extended ballot receipt deadlines, issued new cure guidance and expanded absentee ballot drop-off locations. The North Carolina Alliance for Retired Americans and others intervened in the case to protect the consent decree’s expansion of voting rights during the COVID-19 pandemic. The U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of North Carolina temporarily enjoined (meaning blocked) the enforcement of the state court’s consent decree before consolidating the case with Moore v. Circosta and transferring it to the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of North Carolina. The Middle District declined to grant the plaintiffs’ requested preliminary injunction. The 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals affirmed and the U.S. Supreme Court denied the application for injunctive relief filed by the Trump campaign.
