Nevada Washoe County USPS Processing Center Transfer Challenge

Washoe County v. DeJoy

Lawsuit filed by Washoe County, Nevada against Postmaster General of the United States Louis DeJoy and the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) challenging the USPS’s decision to transfer mail-in processing operations from Reno, Nevada to Sacramento, California in January 2025 as part of DeJoy’s Delivering for America (DFA) plan. The DFA plan is a 10-year initiative to improve the USPS. As part of that plan, USPS has begun transferring regional mail-in processing centers to increase efficiency. The county claims that USPS did not seek advice from the Postal Regulatory Commission and provide the county with an opportunity to be heard. The county argues that this violated federal law and the transfer to Sacramento will significantly delay the processing of voter registration documents, mail-in ballots, sample ballots and other election mail. The county asks the court to block DeJoy and USPS from implementing the DFA plan until they follow the proper procedures for implementing these changes.

STATUS: Washoe County filed their complaint on May 28, 2024. USPS has not responded yet.
