Minnesota COVID-19 Election Relief
LaRose v. Simon
Lawsuit filed on behalf of the Minnesota Alliance for Retired Americans Educational Fund and individual voters challenging two restrictive vote by mail laws in Minnesota: one that required absentee ballots to be filled out with a registered voter or notary as a witness and the other mandating that absentee ballots must be received by 8 p.m. on Election Day. The complaint alleges that these laws place undue burdens on the right to vote, particularly during a pandemic when social distancing is in place, in violation of the Minnesota Constitution and the First and 14th Amendments. Minnesota agreed to not enforce either of these laws for the primary and general elections in 2020, and the case was dismissed.
