Lawsuit filed by the Department of Justice against the state of Georgia challenging voter suppression law Senate Bill 202. The complaint alleges that the law — which, among other provisions, shortens the absentee ballot request timeline, adds new restrictions for drop box locations and criminalizes “line warming” to help voters waiting in line — was enacted with the intent “to deny or abridge the right of Black Georgians to vote on account of race or color” in violation of Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act. The Republican National Committee (RNC), National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) and Georgia Republican Party intervened in the case to protect S.B. 202. Litigation is ongoing.
