Florida COVID-19 Election Relief
Nielsen v. DeSantis
Lawsuit filed on behalf of individual voters, Priorities USA, the Florida Alliance for Retired Americans and Alianza for Progress against Florida and its 67 county supervisors of elections challenging multiple aspects of the state’s vote by mail plans during the COVID-19 pandemic, specifically: the ballot receipt deadline, ballot assistance and collection ban and lack of prepaid postage for mail-in ballots. The parties entered into a settlement with the Florida secretary of state, the terms of which included: educating supervisors about prepaid postage for mail-in ballots; voter accessibility technology and polling location options in light of the COVID-19 pandemic; encouraging the supervisors to inform voters of all early voting options; maximizing the availability of drop boxes; and providing Spanish-language materials.
