Arizona Maricopa County Elections Administration Challenge
Strong Communities of Arizona, Inc. v. Maricopa County
Lawsuit filed by former President Donald Trump advisor Stephen Miller’s right wing legal group on behalf of Strong Communities Foundation of Arizona, Inc. and a Maricopa County resident against Maricopa County, members of the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors and the Maricopa County Recorder challenging Maricopa County’s election administration procedures. The plaintiffs argue that these officials have violated numerous state laws and regulations concerning chain of custody procedures, ballot reconciliation, signature verification, ballot curing, voter registration cancellations and drop boxes.
The plaintiffs also allege that Maricopa County has allowed voters to cast ballots at illegal voting centers that are heavily distributed across Black and Hispanic neighborhoods, putting white and Native American voters at a disadvantage. The plaintiffs are seeking an injunction from the court to require Maricopa to revise its election administration procedures to comply with state law. On Feb. 22, 2024, the plaintiffs asked the court to voluntarily dismiss the case. The next day, the plaintiffs filed a similar lawsuit in Yavapai County.
RESULT: On Feb. 27, 2024, the judge granted the plaintiffs request to dismiss this case.
