Congressional Democrats Introduce Bill to Fund Election Administration
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, Rep. Nikema Williams (D-Ga.) led the introduction of the Sustaining Our Democracy Act to provide $20 billion in federal funding over the next decade for state and local election administration. U.S. Sens. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) and Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) introduced its Senate companion bill, S.4239, two weeks ago. So far, there are 10 Senate and 23 House cosponsors.
The Sustaining Our Democracy Act would provide funding to upgrade voting equipment, expand voter registration opportunities, polling places and the availability of early and mail-in voting, recruit and train nonpartisan poll workers, increase voting access for underserved communities and more. “My bill will help hardworking local elections officials have all the resources they need to defend our democracy,” said Williams in a press release. “With the very soul of the country at [stake], there are no two sides to this issue. You are either on the side of democracy or you aren’t.”
