American Airlines Opposes Texas Voter Suppression Bill
WASHINGTON, D.C. — American Airlines is the latest company to come out against Republican voter suppression legislation in Texas. On Thursday, the Fort Worth-based company released a statement that it is “strongly opposed” to Senate Bill 7, which advanced through the Texas state Senate this week. The bill would enact new restrictions on early voting hours, ban drive-thru voting and prevent election officials from proactively mailing out absentee ballot request forms to qualified voters.
American outlined its concerns with any reforms that make voting harder, especially for those who already face historic barriers to voting. “We acknowledge how difficult this [legislation is] for many who have fought to secure and exercise their constitutional right to vote. Any legislation dealing with how elections are conducted must ensure ballot integrity and security while making it easier to vote, not harder,” the company said.
Microsoft and Dell, both corporations with big business in Texas, have also come out against the legislation. Dell is headquartered in Round Rock, Texas.
