Massachusetts State House Race Flips by One Vote After Recount
WASHINGTON, D.C. — On Thursday, Dec. 8, an automatic recount in a Massachusetts state House race flipped a seat from red to blue by a single vote. If the recount stands, Democratic challenger Kristin Kassner defeated five-term incumbent state Rep. Lenny Mirra (R) to represent the Massachusetts House of Representatives 2nd Essex District, a coastal district bordering New Hampshire. According to the Boston Globe, Mirra intends to challenge the results.
With these latest results, Democrats hold 133 seats compared to Republicans’ 25 seats in the Bay State’s lower legislative chamber. Massachusetts Democrats also hold a supermajority in the state Senate and flipped the governorship in November.
