Oregon Legislative Redistricting Challenge (Sheehan)
Sheehan v. Oregon Legislative Assembly
Lawsuit filed on behalf of a former Republican state legislator and Republican voter challenging Oregon’s new legislative districts drawn with 2020 census data. The petitioners argue that the new state Senate and House districts violate the Oregon Constitution because the Legislative Assembly allegedly ignored public input on the maps by failing to hold in-person hearings (remote hearings were held due to COVID-19 concerns) and drew legislative districts to favor Democrats. The petitioners ask the Oregon Supreme Court to adopt their proposed plan, titled the Equitable Map Oregon Plan, to replace the current maps. The court dismissed the petition, finding that the petitioners “have not demonstrated that [the map] violates applicable law in any of the ways they have asserted.”
