Alabama Republicans Pass Curbside Voting Ban
WASHINGTON, D.C. — In the final day of their session, Republicans in the Alabama Legislature approved a ban on curbside voting. House Bill 285, which passed the state House in March, would prohibit election workers from setting up curbside voting and ban the placement of voting machines outside of polling places. Alabama has not had any curbside voting established in the state, but the bill comes as Republicans nationwide restrict voting options, including highly successful curbside, drive-thru and 24-hour voting methods that allowed disabled and high-risk voters to safely cast a ballot during the pandemic.
The bill passed in the final hours of the state Legislature’s session. Democrats in the state Senate attempted to filibuster the legislation and run out the clock before a final vote, but Republicans voted to end debate and passed the bill 25-6. The bill now advances to Gov. Kay Ivey (R) for her signature.
