House Impeachment Managers Ask Trump To Testify
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Two days after former President Donald Trump’s legal team filed an answer to the articles of impeachment against him, lead impeachment manager Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) sent a letter to Trump inviting him to testify before or during the Senate impeachment trial.
Raskin asked Trump to testify — under oath and including cross examination — because of his denial of “many factual allegations set forth in the article of impeachment.” In Trump’s answer, he denied that his statements “asserting the Presidential election results were the product of widespread fraud” were false.
Today’s letter also used Trump’s argument that he is now a private citizen as further reason he should testify, saying “whereas a sitting President might raise concerns about distraction from their official duties, that concern is obviously inapplicable here. We therefore anticipate your availability to testify.”
The letter asks Trump to respond no later than this Friday, Feb. 5, at 5:00 p.m. ET.
