DNC and Arizona Democratic Party Challenge New Voter Purge Law

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, the Democratic National Committee (DNC) and the Arizona Democratic Party took the first step in challenging a newly enacted Arizona voter suppression law that allows third parties designated by the state Legislature to review the state’s voter rolls in search of ineligible voters. This law, designed by Arizona’s Republican Legislature, also mandates that any voters deemed ineligible by the third parties must be removed from the rolls — without requiring any notification that the voter’s registration has been cancelled. DNC Chairman Jaime Harrison summarized the law by saying that “rather than leaving elections to election professionals, Arizona’s Republican legislature has granted itself the power to appoint a private party to unilaterally disqualify voters without even giving them notice.”

The DNC and Arizona Democratic Party sent a demand letter to Arizona officials arguing that this law violates the U.S. and Arizona Constitutions by infringing on the due process rights of voters. Sending such a letter is the first step in commencing litigation under the National Voter Registration Act, a federal law that aims to make voter registration and maintenance easy and accessible.
