Conservative Group To Spend $10M To Restrict Voting in Swing States

WASHINGTON, D.C. — In one of the first Republican responses to restrict access to the ballot in the wake of the historic For the People Act, the nonprofit arm of the conservative Heritage Foundation announced Monday that it will be investing at least $10 million on a multi-pronged effort to influence election laws in key swing states. Additional investment in the Republican-backed voter suppression war chest is expected to follow.

The push to restrict access to the ballot would involve paid ads on television and radio, direct lobbying to state legislatures and volunteer mobilization campaigns. Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Michigan, Nevada, Texas and Wisconsin are the focus of Heritage Action’s first suppression push, which would include stricter ID laws, expanding voter roll purging, allowing observers to monitor the final ballot counting process and more.

Democracy Docket continues to monitor this effort, as well as any other Republican financing of voter suppression efforts ahead of 2022.
