GOP Asks to Intervene in FL Voter Suppression Lawsuit
WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Republican National Committee (RNC) and the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) filed a motion to intervene in a challenge to Florida’s omnibus voter suppression law. The law, Senate Bill 90, was signed by Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) earlier this month in a mostly closed-press event where only Fox News was invited. The law bans anyone except poll workers from distributing food and water to voters waiting in line, cuts the period over which absentee ballot requests will be honored and shortens the time in which ballot drop boxes may be used — pulling tactics used by lawmakers in Georgia earlier this year to suppress the vote and discourage turnout.
The RNC and NRSC have intervened in other challenges to state laws across the country, and on Thursday they filed to bring their legal and financial resources to Florida Republicans’ fight to preserve this voter suppression law. In their motion, the groups argued that overturning the suppression law would change the structure of the competitive environment in which Florida holds its elections, harming their electoral interests and discouraging Republican voters from voting.
