Civil Rights Groups Sue Georgia Republicans Over Election Bill

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Late Thursday, the New Georgia Project, Black Voter Matter Fund and Rise filed a lawsuit against Georgia challenging the passage of Senate Bill 202, a 95-page voter suppression bill that passed this afternoon. Both the state Senate and House approved the bill today in order to rush it to Gov. Brian Kemp (R), who signed it this evening at a televised press conference.

The suit alleges that S.B. 202 imposes a multitude of voter restrictions (like shortened time periods for voting in a run-off, banning line warming, restricted use of drop boxes and more) that, when combined, create a cumulative voter suppression effect in violation of the 14th Amendment and Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act. The suit directly challenges several provisions of the bill.
