UPDATE: NAACP Sues Trump for Inciting Insurrection
WASHINGTON, D.C.—The NAACP and Representative Bennie Thompson (D-MS 2nd District) filed a lawsuit Tuesday against former President Trump, Rudy Giuliani, the Proud Boys and the Oath Keepers for their roles in the January 6 violent insurrection.
The complaint accuses the former president, his lawyer and the two white supremacist organizations of violating the Ku Klux Klan Act, which was enacted to protect both African Americans and lawmakers in Congress from white supremacist violence. The lawsuit said Defendants “conspired to prevent, by force, intimidation and threats, the Plaintiff, as a Member of Congress, from discharging his official duties to approve the count of votes.”
This lawsuit comes shortly after Trump was acquitted in the Senate impeachment trial on the similar charge of incitement of insurrection. Tracking Trump’s actions leading up to the riots, the case argues that the insurrection was a “direct, intended and foreseeable result of the Defendants’ unlawful conspiracy.”
