Top Michigan Officials Seek Disbarment of “Kraken” Conspiracist Sidney Powell

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D), Attorney General Dana Nessel (D) and Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson (D) filed ethics complaints today with the Texas State Bar against right-wing lawyer and conspiracy theorist Sidney Powell. All three complaints declare Powell “unfit to practice law” and ask for her to be disbarred.

The complaints reference one of Powell’s frivolous election challenges — King  v. Whitmer that sought to disenfranchise more than 5.4 million Michiganders who voted in the 2020 election. While Powell’s lawsuit ultimately failed in Michigan federal court, the mere filing of the election challenge “cast unwarranted doubt on the results of Michigan’s free and fair elections,” the Michigan officials said in a letter to the Texas State Bar’s Office of the Chief Disciplinary Counsel. The complaint goes on to charge Powell and her associates with inciting the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol.

“We urge you to find that Ms. Powell has abused her privilege to practice law and to impose the harshest sanctions available. Nothing short of permanent disbarment would be appropriate under these circumstances. Nor could any lesser sanction cleanse the taint that Ms. Powell brings to the Texas Bar by her continued association with it,” Whitmer said in the complaint.
